Floating Engine
Volunteers have always been the backbone to Fire and EMS in Prince George. The Floating Engine is a program setup by the Fire and EMS office. The program was first setup to help out during Monday through Friday from the times of 0700hrs through 1700hrs because of limited personnel. The Floating Engine is a group of well trained personnel that includes a Driver, Officer, and at the minimum of one firefighter. The Engine is marked on duty at the beginning of the shift and responds to all fire and certain EMS calls throughout Prince George. With this engine staffed during the day in Prince George County the typical time for a engine on the road is 5 to 7 minutes these are reduced to 2 minutes.
This program has grown since put in place July 2010. Company 2, Company 5, and Sub-Station 3 are the companies involved with this program. When a fire or emergency call comes in the closest fire company is alerted, but with this new program the floating engine is dispatched at the same time, allowing whichever engine is closest to respond first and the second engine then arrives to provide extra help.
On some days in Prince George County, there are two fire engines staffed and waiting for the next emergency call to come in.
